House Moves: Halting or Changing Utilities and Deliveries

Mar 17, 2022

House moves arguably rank high in the list of the most stressful things someone might have to undergo in life. Some people dread it because you have to coordinate several tasks at once, and you could easily forget one of the tasks. If one task fails, you could end up with a derailed house move that has long-term effects.

This article will guide you on some of the most forgotten house move tasks — halting or transferring utilities and regular deliveries.

Halting or Transferring Utilities

People generally forget to transfer utilities like the phone, electricity, internet, and gas during house moves. Others might postpone the process until it is too late and they have to deal with the consequences. But you can make plans to avoid the dread when you realize your new house does not have utilities.

First, you should inquire from your broker what part of the utility transfer process the involved company might manage and the part you're to handle. This process is applicable regardless of whether it's intended for your new or old home.

Based on the utility company, some of the duties you might handle include a final read of the meter in your old home. You should take a picture of the meter for evidence or reference in the future, as it will include a timestamp of the date you read the meter.

Second, if you intend to move with your Wi-Fi (wireless fidelity) or phone services, you should inform your service provider in advance. You should also include the exact date you intend to move houses in your notice. Early notices are essential as the processes required to set services in a new location might take weeks.

Notably, you might experience a delay of some utilities in your new house despite early notices; thus, you should download important information like directions and appliance instructions before the move. This process might save you the hassle of your internet being down in a new place.

Halting or Changing Address of Regular Deliveries

Don't wait until the last minute to halt or change the address of regular deliveries. This entire process takes about a week. You should communicate with the shipper or delivery company of your products to confirm whether they operate in the location of your new house.

If the involved companies don't operate in your new home, you should inform them to halt deliveries to your old home. However, if they operate in your new location, you could provide them with your new address and the exact date you will relocate.

Deliveries might be the last thing on your mind when you have to pack your household items into several boxes. You might forget that you have scheduled regular deliveries like groceries, weekly or monthly prescriptions refills, pet food, newspapers, and mail.

But you should prioritize this phase of the house move process. This step will help you not miss vital products like your prescriptions. Besides, you could halt deliveries to your old address to avoid porch piracy.

However, you might miss some one-time deliveries you had previously scheduled even if you manage this process keenly. Temporal forwarding services could be handy to avoid this inconvenience as you settle in your new home.
